Spring has sprung and, naturally, people want to spend more time outdoors. That’s a natural inclination. Moreover, it can be good for those who are dealing with wounds to exercise. However, you also want to do so safely. The last thing anyone wants is to see some improvements in their wounds only to make things worse. Here at West Coast Wound Care, we believe that education is one of the most important parts of wound care.
These are some of the wound prevention tips for spring. Obviously, nothing is foolproof. If you have any questions about treatment for your wounds or the wounds of a loved one, reach out for an appointment.
Exercises with a Great ROI
It’s understandable if, while you’re healing from wounds, you’re unable to do certain exercises. However, you want to seek out the exercises that you can do, the ones that will provide you with the most “return on investment.” If you’re unfamiliar with “ROI,” it’s a business term that basically means that you want to get the most benefit from your investment. So, in terms of exercise, it means getting the most benefits with the least amount of exercise.
What’s the key to exercising while dealing with wounds? Substitution. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can. Our health care techs will work with you to find the proper, safe, and effective wound care exercises for you.
An Example
So, as an example, maybe it’s impossible for you to walk. Yes, walking can be a great low-impact exercise. Doing so during the spring months can be rewarding, particularly after a long winter.
But, if you can’t walk, that doesn’t mean that you’re out of exercise options. Many who are unable to walk, we’ve found, are able to do exercises like calf pump exercises. These exercises are also low impact and they work the calves.
Your calf muscles play a significant role in the circulation of your blood. By doing these exercises, you may be able to keep varicose veins at bay, too, among other benefits. Now, these calf pump exercises may not be quite as effective as walking. But, they can be very close. As such, they can make it so that those who were unable to walk can still get effective, beneficial exercise in.
Of course, the benefits of exercise like this go far beyond simply the physical benefits. The release of endorphins, the burning of calories, feeling stress leave your body, that sense of accomplishment from having completed a workout – there’s so much that you can get from even a seemingly simple, low-impact workout.
Little Changes to Make a Big Difference With Balance
Even the seemingly smallest changes can make a big difference when it comes to exercise and your wound care. For example, we can work with you to find products like compression socks, wraps, and the like, which may make it a bit easier for you to move around (and, ultimately, to exercise).
Additionally, we can put together a plan for you that may involve walking for brief periods of time that eventually go longer, and so forth. Always, our experienced professionals can make an exercise plan that fits your life now, so that you can reap the benefits from it for a long time to come.
