Faster, safer wound care – that’s what negative pressure wound therapy treatment (NPWT) can do. Here at West Coast Wound Treatment, we use negative pressure wound therapy treatment to provide our patients with the most effective wound treatment in Los Angeles and other areas. The name “negative pressure wound therapy” may sound a little intimidating, but it’s not. In fact, it’s a gentle, safe, wound treatment that’s proven to be effective. When patients reach out to us for an appointment, we’ll talk to them about their wounds, their needs, etc. Then, we devise a wound care treatment plan that’s right for the patient. Often, that includes negative pressure wound therapy treatment for a variety of reasons.

What Does Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Do?

Your wounds may contain fluid and bacteria. Those can cause any number of problems, not the least of which is that they may slow or even inhibit healing. Negative pressure wound therapy gets rid of those. By creating suction, it takes fluid and bacteria out of your wound. That way, your wound is in a cleaner, better healing environment. Beyond that, as this is negative pressure wound therapy, it can also potentially compress your wound. By reducing its size, your wound can become easier to treat. This may seem minor, but it is not. Many of our patients for whom this treatment has been most effective are those whose wounds can’t be safely closed due to the infection risk. If your wound is chronic, has not been healed by other treatments, reopened, or is particularly complex, negative pressure wound therapy may be able to help.

Who’s a Good Fit for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy?

We’ve found it’s been very effective for a wide range of wounds.  For example, we often use it on those who have burn injuries as well as those who have foot ulcers. It doesn’t just work on one part of the body, on one kind of wound, or anything like that. We have found it’s particularly effective with closed surgical incisions as well as traumatic injuries. That said, every person and every wound is different. We can walk you through your wound care options, determining which is right for your needs.

What is a Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Sessions Like?

One of our techs will cover your wound with a dressing (often foam or gauze), and then seal the wound. That foam is connected to a vacuum pump through a drainage tube. Turning on the pump brings fluid through the foam and through the draining tubing. This will all be carefully monitored by one of our professionals. For example, maybe the pump will turn off, turn back on, and then back off again, etc. Alternatively, it may run until your wound is drained. That way, you’re always receiving the best possible treatment.

Many Different Forms of Wound Care Treatment in Los Angeles and Elsewhere

Negative pressure wound therapy can reduce swelling, stave off inflammation, increase your blood flow and, ultimately, improve your wound’s healing. That said, it’s not going to be the best treatment for every patient. For example, patients who have dead tissue, visible organs/blood tissues, and other problems aren’t going to best be served by negative pressure wound therapy. To that end, we have a wide range of treatments in addition to this form of therapy. Moreover, depending on your location, we may be able to provide treatment in your home, too. Negative pressure wound therapy is, in some cases, portable. To see how we can help you with proven holistic wound care treatment, schedule an appointment through our site.
